Tarbaby is an expandable, organic situation where like-minded musicians are invited to participate. With the trio of Evans, Revis, and Waits as the foundation we strive to augment the group into myriad incarnations. There are no limitations, this is just the beginning. We’re excited to see the manifestations of these various combinations. The core members add up to some weighty experience along the jazz continuum.

The sonic project that is Tarbaby was conceived in a studio session between five of the most multi-dimensional musicians in jazz in the Summer of 2006 - pianist Orrin Evans, drummer Nasheet Waits, bassist Eric Revis, and tenor saxophonists J.D. Allen and Stacy Dillard. Vocalist T.C. III joined the group on 2 tracks. The hard-hitting explorations of their eponymous first recording on Imani Records were described in JazzTimes magazine as “a group that interacts beautifully. The recording leaves you wanting more- much more. That must be the point, for Tarbaby makes every second count". The free-formed collective has set the bar high - nothing less than preserving those core elements that have made creative music what it is.

In early 2010 Tarbaby’s core members propelled the project a step further in an ambitious second studio outing, this time joined by formidable innovators Oliver Lake and Nicholas Payton, and again with J.D. Allen. Tarbaby’s second release, "The End Of Fear", due out in Summer/Fall of 2010, transmits the collective’s insistent statement with even greater potency, in a set of compositions by Andrew Hill, Fats Waller, Sam Rivers, Oliver Lake, The Bad Brains, as well as originals by Revis, Waits, and Evans.
